TMS #043: How to give and receive feedback
The key to improving your business and personal growth
Read time: 4 minutes
Feedback is a tool that can help you improve and achieve your goals. It's important for your work and personal growth, but we don't always know how to give or get feedback well. In this article, I'll show you how to give feedback that helps people grow and allows them to react. I also talk about how important it is to get feedback, which helps you grow into the best versions of yourself.
What is feedback?
Feedback is a form of communication. It is a way to communicate with others about your work, performance, progress, and skills.
Feedback can be positive or negative. It's always useful because it helps you do better work and have better relationships at home and work.
Feedback is a way for managers to give helpful criticism and praise to their employees. Feedback can be written or spoken, but using both methods together is best.
Why do we need feedback?
Feedback is essential because it helps you grow and improve.
Feedback helps you become a better leader, employee, and person. The more you receive feedback, the better you become at receiving it. And that's true for both sides of the equation: giving and receiving feedback. It is a two-way street.
How to give effective feedback
When you're giving feedback, it's crucial that you:
Be timely. If something needs to be addressed, don't wait until the annual review or another big event. Give comments as soon as possible so that the person can learn from their mistakes and improve before they become habits.
Be specific. Base your comments on facts rather than assumptions or stereotypes. If someone asks you what you think about their presentation skills, instead of saying, "You need more practice before giving presentations," try saying, "When you talk about our company's products, services, or projects in front of clients and potential customers, they sometimes seem confused by what we offer." So, both parties will know how to move forward with further training chances for this employee (and other employees facing similar problems).
Be sensitive. Instead of pointing out problems without giving solutions, try to come up with good ideas. This will make it easier for coworkers to work together instead of making them angry about being judged too harshly without knowing why. Also, avoid making personal attacks. Criticism can sometimes seem harsh, but that doesn't always mean that the person giving it has bad goals, either personally or professionally.
Remember that criticism is not the same as a personal attack. It's a way of pointing out flaws or problems with something or someone. You can use this opportunity to help your employees improve their performance. Give them concrete examples of what they're doing wrong and how they can do better, rather than just saying, "You suck," without offering suggestions on improving professionally.
How to receive effective feedback
As a leader, you will receive feedback from your employees. Learning how to use this feedback to improve your business, your personal growth and the growth of those around you is very important.
Here are some of my tips:
Be Open and Honest with Yourself.
When receiving feedback, being open and honest with yourself is important. If someone has said something negative about your work or behavior, try not to get defensive or upset. Instead, focus on what they said and why they felt this way. Ask questions if necessary so there is no confusion about what was said by either party.Take Action Based on Feedback.
Once you have received feedback, taking action based on what has been said is vital. This may involve changing your behavior, implementing new policies, or addressing issues within your team. By taking action, you show that you value the opinions of your employees and commit to continuous improvement.Encourage Open Communication.
Create an environment where employees feel comfortable providing feedback. You achieve this by regularly asking for feedback, actively listening, and being open to receiving both positive and negative comments. Encourage employees to share their thoughts and ideas and ensure they know their opinions are valued.Reflect on the Feedback.
Take time to reflect on the feedback you receive. Consider what changes you can make to improve your leadership style and the work environment. When you reflect on feedback, you can find ways to grow and improve, leading to a more prosperous and peaceful workplace.Follow Up.
After receiving feedback and taking action, following up with the person who provided the feedback is essential. This shows that you value their opinion and are committed to improving based on their input. It also allows you to address any further concerns or questions they may have.
Feedback is key to improving your business and personal growth
Feedback is a way to improve. Feedback helps you improve what you do, whether in your business or personal life. Knowing how well something is doing can be challenging when you don't know how your actions and choices work out.
Feedback also allows you to learn from your mistakes so that you do not repeat them! This is important because you will never reach your goals in life if you keep making the same mistakes and don't learn from them.
Conclusion
Embracing feedback – both giving and receiving – is an essential skill for leaders and individuals alike. By approaching it with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to improvement, we can harness the power of feedback to create positive change in our lives and the lives of those around us.
