How to rediscover your purpose and find your way back to a fulfilling life
Read time: 4 minutes
You're feeling lost and burnt out. You don't feel like yourself anymore, wondering if you'll ever find your way back. I know how this feels because I've been there before. But there's good news! The truth is, life is a journey and not a destination. And we can always find our way back to meaning if we start by finding ourselves.
Here are some tips for getting on the path to fulfillment again:
You don't have to feel lost and burnt out
You are not alone. If you're feeling lost and burnt out, it's normal, and you can get through this. You just have to take the first step. Do you find yourself wondering what your purpose is? Do you feel like life is passing by without making much of an impact on your heart? Then it might be time to do some soul-searching. So let's talk about how you might do this!
What is a purpose anyway?
Purpose is a personal journey, not a destination. You cannot achieve it once and then sit back and relax. Purpose is a way of life, not just your job or career. You often feel lost and burned out when you think of your purpose as something to be achieved or discovered because you are trying too hard to figure it out.
Instead, approach this process with less pressure and more curiosity. Then it becomes much easier to uncover your true calling in life. And rediscovering your passion doesn't have to take years! Let's look at some steps to find yourself again...
What do you need to find your way back to a fulfilling life?
To find your way back to a fulfilling life, you need to be kinder to yourself. You can't expect to make huge changes overnight. Try setting realistic goals for yourself and taking small steps toward achieving them. Often, some aspects of your daily life and work aren't working for you. Consider making some adjustments so that they do (for example, maybe working remotely or changing teams).
Make time for loved ones as often as possible. They'll keep things in perspective when things get tough at work! Finally, let go of any stress-inducing habits (like drinking too much coffee after 2 pm) or unhealthy relationships (like toxic friendships) that might get in the way of living well.
Set realistic goals for yourself
When trying to reach a goal, it can be easy to feel like you're just going through the motions. You may find yourself asking why you're doing this in the first place. It's easy to lose sight of your goal when you get caught up in the expectations of others or in the past. Better focus on what you can do today.
It helps if you set realistic goals for yourself. Goals that don't need you to have superhuman abilities or an endless supply of free time and money. A goal set too high can become a major source of stress because some things will always be out of our control (like bad weather), preventing us from reaching it precisely as planned!
Be kinder to yourself
Feeling lost and burnt out makes it easy to get caught up in negative self-talk. You may beat yourself up for not achieving what you wanted or feeling like a failure. But being kinder toward yourself can help turn things around.
Be gentle with yourself: When things don't go as planned, remember that it's okay to be imperfect. Give yourself some grace! Being gentle means giving yourself time to overcome mistakes or setbacks without giving up on your goals or getting upset about them. It also means remembering that everyone makes mistakes. There's no need to feel guilty about yours when they occasionally happen, even if they seem significant at first glance!
Be patient with yourself: Sometimes, it takes longer than you expect for things in life to come into focus. This also includes finding your purpose. So patience is key here as well!
Forgive yourself: Forgiveness isn't something you do for other people. Forgiveness should also apply to yourself when you make mistakes too (like forgetting an important date). Forgiveness doesn't mean erasing the error altogether. It means recognizing that everyone makes mistakes sometimes. It also means moving forward without dwelling on past errors forever.
Make time for loved ones
When you're feeling burnt out and lost, it can be easy to forget the people who care about you. You may feel like you don't have time for them. Or they'll only ask more of you when they see how stressed and overworked you are. But this isn't true. The people in your life want to help, not add more stress!
Spending time with my wife, family, and friends can help pull me out of my funk when I'm feeling overwhelmed at work. They remind me why I love what I do. They give me perspective on where to focus my energy to regain a productive groove (and take care of myself).
Let go of stress-inducing habits
Stress is one of the biggest causes of burnout. Stress can come from work, family, friends, or your environment. It can also arise from your thoughts and actions. If you have stress-inducing habits that you need to let go of, here are some tips:
Get enough sleep every night (at least 7 hours).
Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption during the day. They'll make it harder for you to fall asleep at night!
Eat healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains instead of processed junk foods with lots of sugar or sodium additives.
Set aside time to relax and unwind. Go for a walk, do some yoga or meditation, or play with your kids.
Focus on doing one thing at a time instead of multitasking. Don’t take on more projects than you can handle. Stick with what's important!
Feel free to ask for help from others if you need it.
Conclusion
It doesn't mean your life is over if you're struggling with burnout. In fact, it's an excellent opportunity to start over and rediscover what makes you happy. The key is to take small steps toward what matters most to you.
One day you will reflect on this time in your life as a positive experience rather than something negative.
