The Surprising Connection Between Quality Rest and Entrepreneurial Achievement
Read time: 4 minutes
Most people don't realize the connection between quality rest and entrepreneurial achievement. To build a successful business, you must use all your mental and physical abilities. This means getting plenty of sleep every night. Something that most entrepreneurs often struggle with. Still, if you focus on sleep and don't think of it as something you do when you have time, you'll have more energy and drive than ever!
Lack of sleep causes health issues
Sleepiness: Getting enough sleep can help you avoid feeling tired during the day! A study found that people who slept less than six hours per night were likelier to feel drowsy during the day.
Heart disease: Sleep deprivation raises your risk for heart disease, the leading cause of death in the U.S.
Diabetes: A study from 2012 found that those who slept less than six hours per night had an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes by 27 percent compared to those who were well-rested.
High blood pressure: Another study found that people who slept less than seven hours a night were likelier to get high blood pressure than those who slept eight hours or more a night (and remember, high blood pressure can lead to strokes).
Obesity: Since lack of sleep gets linked to diabetes and high blood pressure, it also contributes to weight gain and obesity. Both of which have their own negative health effects!
Depression: Studies have shown that people who sleep less than six hours a night are more likely to get depressed.
Cancer: It's unclear if lack of sleep causes cancer, but there is evidence that it can worsen cancers. A study found that people who slept less than five hours each night had a 57 percent higher risk of colorectal cancer than people who slept seven hours or more each night.
Sleep is essential for success
The science of sleep and the way it affects how well you do as a business owner has been well-studied. But it can be challenging to install. Below are four ways you can become more successful, creative and productive by getting more good sleep:
Sleep helps you be more productive by improving your memory recall and concentration levels during the day. This means that when you're working on tasks at work or at home (or both! ), you'll be more likely to remember what needs to be done so that nothing falls through the cracks.
Sleep helps you be more creative by helping you process information from your environment while you're awake. This continues while you're sleeping. So, if something new or interesting happened in your life recently, like meeting someone who could be a great business partner, don't forget about it. It could be what you need for inspiration in the future!
Getting enough sleep provides you with many benefits. For example, increased concentration during the day, and less irritability, which can lead to fewer conflicts with colleagues/friends/family members, and less stress. This is partly because when you sleep, your breathing pattern changes. This helps to relax your body.
Sleep is also crucial for your body to repair itself. This means that when you're not getting enough sleep, your immune system isn't able to function properly, leading to a higher risk of catching colds or other types of illness.
And with all these benefits in mind, it makes sense why we need to ensure enough sleep each night.
How to get more sleep
Here are some of my tips to help you get more rest:
Set a regular bedtime and wake time. The body has an internal clock that will naturally wake you up at the same time every day, so try to sleep when your body tells you it's time.
Exercise during the day, but avoid strenuous exercise within three hours before bedtime. Instead, choose something relaxing like yoga or walking on beach sand.
Make your bedroom dark, cool and quiet. This promotes the quality of rest, as the body can more easily enter its natural sleep cycle.
Avoid caffeine after lunch (caffeine is found in coffee drinks like lattes), alcohol, or nicotine before bedtime. These can disrupt your deep sleep cycle and cause insomnia.
Avoid eating and drinking right before bedtime. Eating too close to bedtime can cause heartburn which can wake you up. So if you have trouble sleeping, try eating earlier in the evening.
Turn off your phone and computer at least an hour before bedtime. The light from these devices can suppress Melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep.
If you can’t turn these devices off, try using a filter that blocks out the blue light from your screen. The brain produces Melatonin when it senses darkness. So try to get as much natural light as possible during the day, especially before bedtime.
Create a routine before bedtime. A quick shower, brushing your teeth, reading a book or magazine, or drinking warm herbal tea can help you get into the habit of going to bed at the same time every night. In this way, your body will know it’s time to sleep.
Take a hot bath before bedtime. This helps relax muscles that may have become tense from stress during the day.
Do something relaxing just before bedtime. Try meditation, reading a book or listening to music.
Listen to relaxing music, such as classical music without lyrics. Just before falling asleep, the melody calms the nerves. Lyrics may keep you awake longer than necessary because you automatically think about what the lyrics mean.
Conclusion
If you want to improve your health and chances of success as a business owner, the answer is to get more sleep. I hope this article has helped you understand how important it is to get adequate rest and how easy it can be when you make it a priority in your life. If you want your business to thrive, ensure you're getting enough rest!
