How Small Daily Habits Can Make a Big Difference
Read time: 4 minutes
Developing good habits is one of the most effective ways to improve yourself in almost any area of life. Yet, it can be hard to stick with something over time if you're not used to doing it consistently. In this post, I'll talk about some simple ways that anyone can start and maintain small daily habits.
How to Develop Small Habits That Stick
To develop a healthy habit, you must first set specific goals and make them realistic.
Be Specific: Instead of saying "I'm going to exercise more," try saying "I'm going to go for a 30-minute walk every day after dinner." Being specific helps your brain know what it needs to do and when it needs to do it.
Be Realistic: You know that feeling when you say something like "I'll never eat another cookie again!" and then find yourself eating cookies? That's because our brains are wired for optimism. We always hope things will work out better than they do! So when you set goals, play it safe by setting yourself up for success - not failure. Your goal should be realistic enough that even on bad days (and there will be many), achieving it won't feel impossible or overwhelming.
Be Consistent: If you have developed your habits with intention, you need consistency. Not only to remember to do them, but to do them over time without fail.
Find a Habit That's Right for You
As you seek a daily habit, think about what you enjoy doing. It can be anything from brushing your teeth to walking the dog, washing dishes, or making coffee.
The next step is to make it easy to do daily without disrupting your life too much. You want something that only takes five minutes or less of your time each day so it feels like a manageable burden to everything else in your schedule.
Also consider whether this activity will be difficult for you or not challenging enough. There should be some level of difficulty. But not so high that it becomes overwhelming and discouraging (and thus unsuccessful).
Once you've established the task, it's time to start building your daily habit. Set aside a specific time to perform this activity, and then try to do it every day without fail. Set aside a place in your schedule where nothing else is happening so there are no distractions or interruptions. Don't get discouraged if you miss a day or two. Keep going!
Stick to It!
You'll have bad days, weeks, and even months where life seems to get in the way of your consistency. Don't give up! If you've worked hard on a habit for a week or a month and there hasn't been enough time to see results, don't worry about how much time you have left. Focus on what you can do today.
Don't think about how much time is left until your goal date either. Instead, focus on the task at hand today (and maybe tomorrow). Worrying too much about where you'll be in five years, causes you stress and anxiety, making it harder to stick with your goals. Don't worry about future events like graduation day or retirement age. Focus on what you need to do today. This will make those things more likely to happen and less like dreams or nightmares.
Keep It Simple, Stupid (KISS)
The best way to establish a habit is by keeping it simple and easy. Make sure to make your routine simple enough, or you will be more likely to fail. Keep your daily habits as short and straightforward as possible, and keep them simple with rules or regulations that are easy to follow.
It's much easier to do something every day if it only takes a few minutes than if you have to sit down for an hour or more. If you're having trouble forming a habit, try breaking it down into smaller chunks. Do them throughout the day instead of all at once.
Don't Change Too Much at Once!
The best way to change is to do it slowly and steadily. If you try to change too much at once, you'll likely give up before progressing.
Instead of trying something new every day (like eating healthy), focus on building one good habit at a time. Once that habit has become part of your routine, move on to another new behavior or break an old one--but don't rush it!
If you want to be more organized, for example, don't start by trying to organize every room in your house. Start small with one area (the laundry room or kitchen cabinets) and make it as tidy and neat as possible. Once that becomes a habit, move on to another area of your home until you've organized them.
Small Daily Habits Make a Big Difference
Consistency is vital in building new habits; small daily habits can make a big difference.
If you want to build any sustainable change, you must be consistent. It's easy to get discouraged when we don't see immediate results from our efforts. Consistency over time makes the difference between failure and success.
Conclusion
In the end, consistency is key. You may not be able to change your whole life overnight. But small daily habits can have a big impact on how you feel about yourself and your relationships with others. Find something that works for you and stick with it!
