TMS #029: 7 Journaling Habits for a Positive Mindset
Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life
Read time: 4 minutes
Journaling helps with a variety of mental health issues. It's also a great way to keep track of what's going on in your life so you can look back on past events and reflect on them later.
In this post, I'll show how journaling can help you change your mindset to live a happier, healthier life. I'll also provide some tips for journaling and ideas for setting up your journal so it works best for you.
1. Journal in the morning
Journaling in the morning will help you get your thoughts out of your head and onto paper. This can be very helpful if you're feeling overwhelmed by them or worried about something. It also helps to get a positive mindset for the rest of the day. It helps with any issues that may arise (like when someone cuts you off on the highway).
2. Use a dedicated notebook or journal
It's essential to use a notebook or journal that you like and enjoy writing in. Find one that fits your personality and style. Don't use something that doesn't fit who you are. If it doesn't feel like "you," it will be hard for your brain to get into the right frame of mind to write in it.
3. Start with an 'ideas list'
The ideas list is a place to capture thoughts, ideas, and inspiration, so they're easy to access. You can write them down in a physical notebook or use an app on your phone. Make it as easy and quick to stay focused; don't get distracted writing down ideas as they come to you.
4. Take your time with each entry
Don't rush, and don't worry about spelling or grammar. If you can write in complete sentences, great! But if not, that's okay too. Writing down your thoughts is the most important part of journaling.
Don't worry about how many words you write or how long it takes to finish one entry. The point of this exercise is to get them out onto paper (or screen). Your goal isn't quantity but quality. Write down thoughts that feel important enough for you to remember later. This will help reinforce positive habits like gratitude and self-care into your routine.
5. Create a ritual around journaling
The next step to creating a journaling habit is to create a ritual around it. A ritual is a repetitive activity where your brain knows what to expect and adjusts to the writing. Create your routines or adapt those from other writers who have found success with them. For example:
Light a candle or play soft music when you start writing (I use classical music).
Write at the same time every day (or at least try).
Use the same pen, notebook, and desk space. Anything that helps make this time feel unique and different from other times of the day.
6. Keep it private
Journaling is a personal activity, so keep your journaling sessions private. Don't let anyone else see what you have written or read the entries in your journal. If someone asks you why you write in your notebook and where they can get one, tell them it's for you and not for sharing.
7. Enjoy your writing process
If you don't enjoy the process of writing, it will be difficult for you to stick with it and reap its benefits. If you dread every minute of journaling, chances are it won't be as helpful as it could be.
If you don't like writing, try changing your style. Try finding something else that fits your personality and lifestyle better.
Keeping a journal will change your life in many ways!
Keeping a journal is one way to create positive mental shifts that can help you improve your life in many ways
Journaling helps you feel calmer and more focused. It also improves memory and is thus a practical learning tool. Journaling helps you make better decisions. It helps you figure out what is important to you based on what you know about yourself and what you have done in the past. You don't need to rely on the advice of others. It helps you deal with stress by giving you a way to let out your feelings or frustrations. This gets them out of your system and lets you move on to other things without feeling too weighed down by them.
Also, keeping a journal allows you space to reflect on your relationships with others. What works well? Where do I need improvement? How am I contributing to those around me? This self-awareness gives you power over your life. You are not controlled by outside influences such as social media or what others think about you at work, school, etc.
Conclusion
I hope you found this article helpful and encouraging. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to journal! If you want to try something new, go for it! The point of writing is not about perfect grammar or spelling. It's about getting your thoughts out, so they don't stay bottled up inside.
