TMS #027: The Importance of Resilience and a Can-Do Mindset
Overcoming Adversity

Read time: 4 minutes
The world is a sea of change and adversity. Between natural disasters and political fighting, it's hard not to feel overwhelmed sometimes. If that's you right now, you're not alone!
It can help to know that there are many ways to deal with problems and keep your mental health in good shape. This post will look at one way to stay strong in hard times: having a "you've got this" attitude.

You've Got This!
You can do anything you set your mind to!
You have the power to change your situation.
You are capable of anything that you put your heart into.
These are some reminders I like to keep in mind when I need a boost. When things get hard, it's important to remember that everyone has their path. No one is exactly like you, so their problems may not be the same as yours. Yes, we all face different challenges at different times in our lives. Put these differences aside and look at what we all have in common: being human.
Maintaining Control of Your Mindset
One of the most important things you can do when facing adversity is to stay in control of your mindset. If you have a positive attitude and are resilient, you will be better able to handle anything that comes your way. You will be able to remain calm and focused on finding solutions.
It is also important not to let others dictate your mental state. For example, it can make you feel bad when someone makes fun of you or makes fun of something that upsets or worries you. This could lead straight into depression if left unchecked. If this happens often enough, it can become a regular part of life. This adds to the stress and can lead to depression or illnesses caused by anxiety, such as panic attacks or agoraphobia (fear of public places).
What Does "You've Got This" Mean?
The phrase "you've got this" is a mindset that can help you overcome adversity. It means you can do it, no matter what. It means you can handle whatever challenges come your way and you can get through anything.
As we've discussed, the world has its ups and downs. But no matter how hard things are, there are always chances to learn and grow around the next corner. If only you are willing to see them! The key is believing in yourself so that nothing else matters. Once you have this conviction behind every decision or action, everything becomes possible!
Your Words Matter
Words have power. The right words can motivate you to do great things and make you feel like a new person. The wrong words can cause stress and anxiety. If you are feeling down, it may be time to take control of your mindset by changing how you think about things.
Replace negative thoughts with positive ones: When you start to think negatively, try to switch to positive thoughts! For example: instead of thinking, “I failed” or “I’m not good enough,” try saying something like “I will succeed next time!” or “I am doing my best!” This slight shift in mindset could be the difference between success and failure in the years to come.
Get rid of toxic people: You know who I mean—those friends who put others down rather than build them up. Those family members who don't support your dreams or goals because they're too concerned about their agendas. The coworkers who talk about each other behind closed doors but never go out in public together, even though they all know each other. All these people are toxic individuals that need their own space away from yours. They'll only bring bad things into your life if you let them get too close without setting limits ahead of time.
Hand-in-Hand with a Can-Do Mindset
The world can be a tricky place. Adversity can come in many forms, and it’s often hard to predict when it will appear. If you’re looking for a way to navigate life more efficiently, resilience and a can-do mindset may be the answer.
Resilience is the ability to deal with problems and get back on your feet after failing or having a setback. Having a can-do mindset means believing that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Even if you don’t have all the resources or people in your corner that others might have at their disposal.
You might think these two concepts are exclusive. One is about how we act when things go wrong, and the other is about how we feel when things go well. But they go hand in hand—both are skills you can learn, like any other skill.
Practicing Resilience
Where can you start practicing resilience?
a) Start simple by making it a habit to say “yes” when people ask you for favors or help them with a task if needed. This one act of kindness can get people off their feet and smile more often than not!
b) When you wake up in the morning, think about how much you have to be thankful for and how little you should complain about. A positive attitude will set the tone for your day and make things easier.
How can I practice resilience at work?
In many jobs, we work long hours under stressful conditions with our backs against the wall. But that doesn't mean we can't be strong! Here are some examples:
Go home early when possible so that you don't get burnt out. Take breaks during lunchtime or after work hours to recharge yourself physically and mentally.
If someone criticizes your work or asks another department in your company to do something without asking your permission first, which happens often, explain why something can't happen until everyone's needs are met. By explaining why you keep people's respect, you ensure nothing goes unnoticed in the future.
Do not forget about yourself, even though others might sometimes forget too. Eat healthy food daily instead of consuming snacks sold by nearby vending machines. You'll thank yourself later!
Instead of thinking you can't do something, try the "you've got this" mindset.
With a positive mindset, you can focus on the best possible outcome. You will feel more confident and hopeful when bad things happen because you will know there is always a way out.
When you keep thinking about failure and bad things, finding solutions or better ways to do things is hard. This can make it much more challenging to overcome adversity as opposed to being able to do so easily.
Conclusion
Resilience is a mindset you can learn. You can develop the attitude that "you've got this" through practice, like any other skill. Take some time to picture how you would respond in challenging situations. Practice your answers or write them down so they come to you when needed.
