TMS #023: How to Achieve Effortless Performance at Work
Great habits for flow and creativity
Read time: 4 minutes
How do you think you would feel if your work life was effortless? Could you perform at your best every day without even trying? Imagine how much more productive and happy you'd be if you could do this.
Everyone can achieve effortless performance. All it takes is to form good habits that make it easy for you to get into a state of flow and creativity.
Here are five tips that I've learned from my own experience as well as from working with colleagues who wanted to improve their performance at work:

1. Meditate
Meditation is a great way to relax, focus, and improve concentration. It can also help you solve problems that have been giving you trouble for weeks. Meditation improves many parts of my life, like how well I sleep, how much stress I feel, how happy I am, and how patient I am. Meditating daily will help you feel less stressed and calmer at work and throughout the day. Meditation can help you focus on tasks by quieting your mind. So you don't get distracted by other thoughts or feelings that might keep you from reaching your goals at work (or outside of work).
2. Exercise
We all know that exercise is good for you, but did you know it can make you more productive? A study from the University of Texas found that even 20 minutes of daily exercise will boost your energy and mood. Exercise creates endorphins—the feel-good chemicals in your brain that makes you happy. And when you’re feeling good, you tend to be more patient and less irritable with others.
Research has also shown that people who work out regularly sleep better than those who don't work out at all or who only do it sometimes. They sleep better because they make more melatonin and have deeper REM cycles. This makes it easier for them to wake up in the morning without needing an alarm clock.
Aerobic exercise can also help your brain work better. Researchers at the University of Illinois found that people who worked out more than three times a week had more gray matter. This led to a better ability to remember and think. I exercise every morning for 15 minutes. Give it a try. But what about the effects of mental exercise?
Studies have shown that games like Sudoku, crossword puzzles, and word searches can help improve memory and focus. So if you want to improve your focus at work, consider taking a break every hour or so to do some brain teasers!
3. Limit your social time online
We all know how easy it can be to spend hours on social media, so it's essential to limit your time in front of a screen. Some people find comfort in scrolling through Instagram or reading posts from friends and family on Facebook. But these things can become habits that take up too much of your time. You may think staying connected to others is the most important thing you can do, but sometimes that connection does more harm than good.
Take breaks from social media, so you don't get too caught up in comparing yourself to others. This will help you avoid feeling guilty or not good enough because of what other people do online.
4. Use time wisely
When you have limited time to get things done, there are ways to make the most of it:
Don't procrastinate. This is especially important when it comes to tasks that take a long time, like writing a report or preparing for an event. If you wait until the last minute, you'll likely feel rushed and stressed out, which won't help your performance!
Avoid multitasking. Some things, like talking on the phone while cooking, may be good to do at the same time, but most experts agree that it doesn't work at work. Focus on one thing at a time rather than switching from task to task throughout the day.
Do not overwork yourself! It's tempting when so much work is piling up in front of us each week. Yet, taking breaks will improve efficiency and performance—so take those breaks often!
5. Challenge yourself to be better
Set goals for yourself. To achieve effortless performance at work, you need to be in the right mindset. The first step is to set out a list of goals that are specific, measurable and realistic. For example:
I want to earn more money by doing less work
I want my boss to recognize me as an expert in my field
Write down your daily routine and schedule time for essential tasks. Don't let other people's opinions affect what you do or don't do on the job. Focus on getting a little bit better every day than you were yesterday, without being envious of others' success. You won't get better results at work if you let jealousy or envy get in the way!
Conclusion
Improving your work performance is something you should always try to do. People who are the most successful don't stop once they have a routine that brings them the success they want. They keep improving and finding new and better ways to improve their work.
Finding and keeping good habits is as important as finding and getting used to them. These habits won't help you unless you do them. So try to find time to work on each one for 30 days straight, and then look at how far you've come. If you still don't feel motivated or inspired after a month, it might be time to get rid of that habit and start doing something else.
Don't give up on your goals, and don't be afraid to make changes when you need to.
