TMS #022: 5 Ways to Make Your New Year's Resolutions Stick
How to make your goals more manageable
I've set and failed to meet New Year's resolutions for years. I'd often start off with a lofty goal like "get fit" or "lose weight," only to realize that it was unrealistic for me.
The good news? You can make your goals more manageable by doing some simple things.
Here are five ways to make sure your resolutions stick:

1. Keep it simple and specific
The more specific a goal is, the easier it will be to achieve. A vague goal like “I want to lose weight” doesn't help you much if you don't know what that means. If your resolution is something like “I want to lose 30 pounds” or “I want to get back into shape,” you have a good start! But now we need some specifics: What kind of shape? Where do you want this weight loss, and how much do you want?
Once you have specific goals in mind, the next step is to break them down into manageable steps. This way, you won't find yourself overwhelmed with a laundry list of things that need to be done. Instead, each step will be small enough to be completed in a reasonable amount of time.
2. Make it a habit
You know that saying, "If you want to lose weight, go to the gym."? If you want your resolutions to stick, make them a habit.
A habit is something that you do every day without thinking about it. If you want to go for a jog every morning at 6 a.m. and forget about it again by dinner time, that's not good enough! You should run at 6 a.m., even if that means getting up earlier than usual or finding another place nearby to run a few miles before work starts again.
Make sure your day resolution becomes more than just an empty promise made during New Year's Eve celebrations. If there's one thing we learned from 2012's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, it's that our lives are made entirely of small daily choices.
3. Reward yourself
It's essential to set yourself up for success by creating a reward system that works for you. Maybe it's a new dress or pair of shoes, an extra hour with your favorite Netflix show, or a new bottle of wine you've wanted to try. Whatever the reward, make sure it fits what "success" means to you and that it will help keep you motivated to achieve your goals.
It is important to celebrate even small successes because they can help reinforce the concept of progress regardless of setbacks. It also makes sure that we don't beat ourselves up when things don't go according to plan (because, let’s face it—they rarely do!).
Don't feel you have to get everything right on day one either; try your best!
4. Share your goals with others
Your friends and family can be great supports as you work toward your goals. If you're trying to lose weight, they may agree to go on a walk with you every morning at 6:00 a.m. or go shopping with you after work.
If they aren't interested in the same goal as you, there's still some benefit in sharing your goals: it can make you feel accountable. You'll want to avoid disappointing them or looking like a slacker if they ask how it's going!
Your social network also has the potential to help build momentum for other people who are trying to achieve similar things as well. For example, if you've resolved to cook healthier, but all your friends want to eat fast food every night because "it makes me happy," meet people outside that circle. Find some who have similar habits.
5. Don't beat yourself up
One of the most important things you can do is not to be too hard on yourself. We all make mistakes and sometimes don’t even realize it when we make them. When you find that you aren’t sticking to one of your New Year's resolutions, don't beat yourself up about it. You're human and everyone makes mistakes! Instead, try to learn from your mistake so that next time the situation comes up again, you won't make the same mistake twice (or worse).
Be kinder to yourself by understanding that everyone has bad days. Days when they don't want to do anything productive or healthy for themselves or others.
Conclusion
It's never too late to make a new year's resolution or start fresh on a goal. The key is to know what you're getting into and understand how to stick with it. If you want to be successful in 2023, take the time now to think about what you want and how you can achieve it.
