TMS #020: 7 Simple Steps to Living a Smarter Life

Focus on what matters most: Yourself

We live in a world that can be challenging to navigate. We have many things to do, places to visit and people to see. The older we get, the more difficult it becomes because life is getting more hectic and we have more tasks than ever.

I know how overwhelming this can feel because I’ve been there myself! But there are ways you can start living smarter today. Keep reading for my seven steps on simplifying your life so you can focus on what matters most: Yourself!

At the end, I have an important news for you.

We have more tasks than ever.

1. Simplify, simplify, simplify

This is a great way to start living a smarter life. It’s not that complicated: Declutter, don’t buy things you don’t need. Don’t overwhelm yourself with work. This will make your life easier and more stress-free!

The first step is to get rid of unnecessary things in your home. That doesn’t just mean physical things, but also digital files or people who take up too much space in your life (you know who that is). If there is something that serves no purpose in your daily life, throw it away or donate it immediately. Clutter has been shown to increase stress levels by up to 30%.

2. Get to know yourself

We often think that our lives are about the things we do, but this is a very small part of it. The rest of your life consists of who you are and how you feel about yourself, both internally and externally.

Take a few minutes each day to consider what’s important to you. What makes you happy, what’s challenging, and what gives you energy? Make sure all these things align with what matters most because if they don’t, it will be much harder to achieve them or even enjoy life! For example: If someone loves their job but hates going outside, they may feel unhappy most days because working 9-5 means not spending time with family or friends outside work hours.

3. Organize your workspace for a clear mind

Organizing your space and avoiding distractions is a great way to overcome the mental clutter that can get in the way of getting your tasks done.

  • Use a timer: Set a timer for 10 to 15 minutes and work on one thing until it goes off. Then, take a break! If you’re working on something important enough to be worth your time, this will help keep you focused and efficient.

  • Work in a quiet space. Find a place where no one is around, so there are fewer distractions when focusing on the task.

  • Clean up after yourself. If someone else needs to use your workspace, it will be much easier (and less stressful) for them if everything is in its place and not all over the place.

4. Create a solid plan for making the most of your time

Plan your time.

It’s essential to plan your day and week to make the most of it. You should know what needs to be done before starting a task, so you should create a schedule for each day. If possible, divide your tasks into smaller portions to make your workload more manageable. This way, you can prevent tasks from getting on top of you and have more freedom regarding how much time you spend on each task. This leads us to our next point: Prioritize your tasks.

When a day has only 24 hours and 100 different things are competing for those hours (not counting sleep), something has to happen! You can’t do everything on your list every day or even every week. It’s not realistic! You can solve this problem by putting the things that need to be done first on top of your list of things to do (or delegating them altogether).

5. Batch similar tasks together

This is a very simple way to organize your day. For example, if you have many tasks that require the same energy and concentration, don’t spread them out over several days. Instead, group them and do them all at once. This will allow you to focus on one task at a time, which will help you focus on the task at hand and avoid distractions.

You can also use this technique for administrative tasks like filing paperwork or cleaning your inbox. Instead of worrying about each piece of paper (or worse, each piece of mail that comes in), make a folder for each thing that needs to be done. Then, empty that folder into another one where everything is organized by category, and you’re done (e.g., receipts go into their own folder).

6. Take baby steps

Taking baby steps is a smart way to start your new lifestyle. It’s the only way you should do it. The best way to avoid feeling overwhelmed is by setting realistic goals that can be achieved in small chunks over time.

You might think that goals set too high are more motivating and inspiring than goals set too low. But if you set goals that aren’t realistic, they’re likely to feel unreachable and hold you back instead of making you feel happy or proud of what you’ve done so far.

Setting realistic and vital goals for you and others who will be affected by your changes (such as your friends and family) is also essential.

7. Don’t overschedule yourself

This is an important point and the most important on the list. We can all get caught up in the rat race of life, but if you want to live smarter, you need to take a step back and look at your schedule with fresh eyes.

  • Are there things that you’ve been saying yes to out of habit?

  • Are things making your life more chaotic than it should be?

  • Are there areas where you could get by with less work or stress?

If so, it’s time to start making some changes!

When it comes down to it, you don’t have enough time. So instead of trying to fit everything into your schedule (or even adding more), you should ask yourself if something new will add value or if something old will take away from what is already working well for you. If not…it might be best to say no!

Conclusion

I hope this blog post has given you inspiration and ideas to try out. Remember, living smarter can be easy, but it’s not always easy. It takes time, effort and commitment to make changes in our lives for the better. So don’t give up if it doesn’t feel like everything is coming together right now! You will get there with hard work.

Cheers,

Christian
