TMS #013: How to Get Disciplined: Six Steps to Success
Take your life from ordinary into something extraordinary
Do you know how many people are looking for ways to become more disciplined? A LOT.
Here are 6 steps that will help you develop the discipline that will take your life from ordinary and average into something extraordinary.
Hi theređ.
Have you ever watched someone else succeed at something, and wished that you had the same discipline? Maybe youâve noticed that person: the one whoâs always on time, who keeps their workspace organized and clean, and who never seems to get frazzled by unexpected changes or setbacks.
You might not even know what it is they do differently than you, but stillâyou want to be like them. The good news is that with a few simple steps and some hard work, anyone can become more disciplined than they are now!
1. Give your highest priorities the most time
First, you must decide what your highest priorities are. This is the first step in any successful endeavor. When it comes to getting disciplined, your most important tasks are those that will bring you the greatest benefitâand perhaps even happinessâin life.
Once you know what these priorities are for yourself, give them more time than you think they deserve. The reason for this is simple: If something doesnât seem like a priority because it isnât high on our lists of things to do at any given moment in time (or ever), then we put it off until tomorrow or next week or whenever else we can make time for it.
In other words, if something isnât at least somewhat urgent to us when weâre making plans with ourselves about how much work needs doing and how much free time there will be available over the next few days/weeks/months/years etc., then chances are good that weâll never get around to tackling that task at all!Itâs not enough just knowing where our highest priorities lie; we have also got to discover ways to ensure that we actually do spend more time working on those things than anything else!
2. Use a daily planner
There are three major reasons to use a daily planner: it will help you keep track of your schedule, create a space for reflection, and give you the opportunity to make plans for the next day or week. A great daily planner will have both short-term and long-term goals so that they can be achieved in a timely manner. You must use this method every day or else it wonât work!Use your calendar to keep track of appointments and events. This may seem like an obvious way to manage your schedule, but itâs also one that people often forget about. If you have a busy life, then having a calendar with all of your monthly, weekly, and daily plans on it will help you not miss any important engagements or errands!
3. Bribe yourself with rewards
Rewards are a powerful tool for staying motivated and disciplined, as they can help you to stay on track when the going gets tough. That being said, giving yourself rewards doesnât mean that you should be patting yourself on the back after every accomplishment (although it may feel good at the moment). Rather than simply rewarding yourself for making progress towards your goals, think about what would make those achievements even more meaningful to you and then make them happen!
As an example: if your goal is to lose weight or get fit, instead of simply saying âIâve lost five pounds now; I deserve that juicy cheeseburger,â try using some other reward besides food as motivationâlike hitting up your favorite clothing store after hitting your goal weight or buying some new running shoes before running a marathon.
4. Create a to-do list
You canât do everything at once, and you probably donât have all day to figure out what your priorities are. Thatâs why the next step is so important: create a to-do list for the week.
This is where youâll prioritize your tasks and decide which ones will get done first. Your goal here is to make sure that there are enough hours in the day (and days left in the week) to get everything done. If there arenât, re-evaluate how many tasks and projects youâre committing yourself to so that they donât overwhelm you with their demands on your time or energy. You should also think about breaking up large tasks into smaller parts; otherwise, they might seem overwhelming when it comes time for execution! And finally, write down what needs doing whenâitâs easy for things like grocery shopping or errands slipping through the cracks if theyâre not written down somewhere visible!
5. Eliminate distractions and excuses
Distractions and excuses are often the difference between success and failure, so itâs important to learn how to eliminate them. To do this, youâll need to:
Take a hard look at your daily schedule. Is there anything that can be eliminated? Perhaps a TV show or movie that isnât necessary for your life? Maybe you can start limiting social media usage, or maybe even cutting back on video games and other time wasters.
Learn how to say no. Saying yes all the time makes us feel guilty when we have something else we should be doing instead, which only leads us down the path of distraction and excuse-making! Instead of saying yes all the time (or having people ask), try saying no when necessaryâand then sticking with it! Youâll find yourself feeling more accomplished than ever before!
Plan ahead as much as possible so your day doesnât get away from youâeven if this means writing out what needs to be done on a piece of paper every morning before starting work or school in order not to forget any tasks throughout the day.
6. Leave wiggle room in your schedule
Donât forget to leave room in your schedule for emergencies, unexpected opportunities, fun, relaxation, and self-care. You canât predict the future but you can plan for it by leaving room for all aspects of life.
Leave time at the end of each day to spend with your family or friends. Leave space in your calendar so that you can go on vacation and have spontaneous adventures with your kids or spouse (or both). Donât get caught up in trying to stick strictly to a rigid plan or schedule; allow yourself some flexibility so that you arenât overwhelmed by everything demanding attention at once.
Make the decision and take the steps
We all have areas in our life where we could be more disciplined. Itâs a choice, but it doesnât have to be that way forever. You can become more disciplined than you are now if you make the decision to do so and take steps to get there.
You need to choose to be disciplined and then commit yourself to do whatever it takes to achieve your goalâeven if it means making sacrifices in other areas of your life for a time (like spending less time with friends or family). But remember: If you want something bad enough, then the sacrifice is worth it when compared to what your ultimate goal will mean for yourself and those around you!
Conclusion
Being disciplined isnât easy, but it can be done. The best way to get started is by deciding what you want to achieve and then working on it every day. It doesnât matter if you are trying to lose weight or build your businessâif you make a plan and keep at it long enough, you will succeed!
Cheers,
Christian
