TMS #011: Helpful Tools Against Your Overload
Unlock how to perceive your own limits
Unlock how to perceive your own limits and recognize stress at an early stage.
Overload is a statistically proven phenomenon. More than 60% of people between the ages of 30 and 70 feel that life is more stressful today than it was 15 or 20 years ago.
People can no longer cope with their daily tasks due to their overload.
A stress study in Germany showed that 48% of 40 to 59-year-olds often felt worn out and used up. 41% of the age group cannot really switch off in the evenings and at weekends. 37% of 18- to 39-year-olds said they no longer have enough time for family and friends.
In private life, there is often leisure time stress with many appointments. We put pressure on ourselves with the feeling that we have no time, our urge to be in control, and our constant expectations of ourselves and our environment. This leads to overload.
In this newsletter, you will unlock how to identify your stressful situations, how to perceive your limits, and how to better deal with stress.
Look From Above
Challenge 1:
One reason for feeling overloaded is the need to be in control of everything and everyone. But some areas and situations cannot be controlled. You cannot control the weather or the train or influence other people.
Solution 1:
Before you stand in front of your delayed train next time, realize that you do not influence the situation. Try to get a bird’s eye view of the event. Try to find out which possibilities are within your control and which are not.Ask yourself three questions:
How can I deal with the situation?
What can I do?
Can I do anything at all?
This distance helps you not to be immediately overwhelmed by the feeling of powerlessness and thus to reduce overburdening.
Let Go Of Your Expectations
Challenge 2:
Do you know everyday situations in which things don’t go quite as you would like them to? You have anticipated, assumed, or hoped for something different. It is your expectations that can even be correct. If you expect your partner to listen to you, this is an indicator that communication in a relationship is important to you.But with an expectation also comes disappointment. In doing so, you unconsciously put yourself under pressure.
Solution 2:
Create awareness of your expectations. Learn not to make yourself dependent on a certain outcome of a situation. Don’t extrapolate from yourself to other people. Through meditation, you can let go of these expectations and be open to whatever comes.Communication can prevent disappointment and make you aware of your expectations. Talk about your hopes, desires, and expectations as well as your worries and fears. Tell how you imagine certain situations and find out what your counterpart thinks about them.
Feel Your Pressure
Challenge 3:
Stress usually manifests itself in the form of pressure:
Expectation pressure
Time pressure
Need for control
This pressure usually starts in your mind but quickly spreads to your body. Examples include pressure on your chest, a tightening in your neck, or the feeling that something has hit your stomach.
Solution 3:
To identify possible causes, learn to notice pressure in your body. The pressure caused by stress can manifest itself on three levels:
physical level: sweat production, increased breathing frequency, or tense muscles.
emotional level: anger, irritability, or frustration.
human level: brooding, inner nervousness, or overthinking.
The physical, emotional, and mental side effects of pressure can also give you information about the situations that cause you stress. Pay attention to what your body is telling you. Learn to listen to it.
The Here And Now
Your overload is also a path to self-knowledge. Expectations and control are often associated with fears or desires from the future or the past. Free yourself from them, detach yourself from yesterday or tomorrow and arrive in the present. Try meditation to achieve this and relieve stress.
See you next week.
Cheers,
Christian
